The
Camp de Túria region is made up of flat and hilly areas such as the
Calderona mountain range, chosen by many inhabitants from the large cities
to spend the summer (Serra
and Náquera).
The climate is Mediterranean, pleasant and a little cooler in higher parts.
The basic activity of the region is agriculture, which is easily spotted
with mile upon mile of orange groves, there is also an industrial section.
As well as the innumerable natural beauty spots that make up the landscape
of this region there is an enormous inheritance of art and history with many
interesting monuments.
The
village of Náquera (Villas Valencia offices)
now famous for the beauty of its mountains and fertile agricultural land,
was once known for its hard labour carried out by land workers extracting
marble which was situated in these mountains and was highly valued for the
decoration of the churches and cathedrals. This area, just 20 km from the
city is considered the gateway to the Sierra Calderona which was declared a
natural park by the Valencian Regional Government in 2002.
The
next village is Serra, which with its ancient
towers and cobblestone streets is worth visiting. It is particularly well
known for its cherries as well as a very good restaurant El Granero (advance
booking required!). Worth the diversion even though you can usually only
see it from afar is the fantastic 13-16th century Cartuja of
Porta Coeli, a monastery open only to men on
certain days of the year.
The
village of Benaguacil is to be found on the
left of the river Turia with pleasant surrounding countryside.
Benisano is an ancient walled village which has
an interesting 16th century castle/palace, as well as medicinal
waters.
Betera is growing fast through its metro
connection to the city although the orange groves are still on its
doorstep. The 18 hole Golf Course is also to be found here as well as the
recently opened luxury Spa Calderona.
Casinos is a place for Valencians to take a day
trip to and to buy their turron – a type of nougat – made from eggs, almonds
and sugar by local families.
The old
town of Lliria has many monuments and is well
worth a visit including its 13th century church and 14th
century Arab bakery. It is known as the town of music as its bands have won
many national and international prizes.
La Pobla de Vallbona has many residential areas
around its fertile countryside.
Olocau has an 18th century church
which stands out of this quaint village together with the old residence of
the Counts of Olocau, and the castle.
L’Eliana
is a town with all of the infrastructure to satisfy the many residents who
live there and the surrounding areas, and who work there or in the city.
The old
town of Riba-Roja still preserves one of its
17th century bridges over the river Turia and for younger
visitors the main park has a collection of miniature trains.
Villamarxant is found in a hilly area, where
there is soon to be a new hotel. It already boasts one of the most
prestigious modern restaurants of Valencia in its countryside.
