The
name of the region, the "Upper Bank", refers to the Júcar river which
travels from Cuenca bringing fertile water to these often arid flatlands.
Agriculture is the main occupation of the region, especially the cultivation
of oranges since 18th century. In the northern part of the region
the vineyards offer the famous
Turis
and Monserrat
Muscatel wines.
The town of
Alberic
has a few interesting monuments one of which is its 17th century
church.
The city of
Algemesi
celebrates its fiesta, which it has been doing for the last 800 years.
Apart from its basilica, also worth seeing is its `portable’ wooden bullring
which the city folk construct every year!
Alginet
- in the centre of the town are the rests of a 16th century
castle.
The capital of this area is
Alzira
surrounded by its splendid ancient Arab walls, which sits high upon the
river Xuquer.
A few miles away we find the
city of Carcaixent
with its historic citrus stores, as well as its many other interesting
ancient buildings.
The 13th Century
façade of the old convent in
Carlet
is worth seeing.
The medieval towers of
Benifaio
and Alfarp
are also of note.
Catadau
is known for its leather works.
Monserrat
is situated between the rivers of Magro and Castellet. Once a small
agricultural village it is now becoming a popular place to live.
Just next door are
Montroy
and Real de Montroy
which are important centres for honey and making beeswax.
To the north is
Turis,
which is set in attractive countryside.
