Camp de Morvedre and Sagunto.
|
Camp
de Morvedre occupies the seventh sector of the province and includes the
northern coastal area. The Palancia river is its central axis, flanked by
the Calderona mountain range. Within the mountain range are the peaks of
the Garbí and the Picayo. At their base an authentic forest of orange trees
stretches out towards the beaches.
Camp de Morvedre offers a wide
range of possibilities: beaches of fine sand with dunes and crystal water,
pine forests and natural viewing points, monasteries within the heart of the
mountain ranges (Sant Esperit - Gilet) legendary mountain ranges like the
Sierra Calderona, mountain towns and villages, castles and springs.
The
ancient city of Sagunto with its many national
monuments is of great interest. The castle and the Roman amphitheatre are
still in use and should be visited as well as the ancient Jewish quarter.
Excavations still continue with many interesting artefacts coming to light.
Not far from the large commercial port of Sagunto
are their good fine sandy beaches.
Nearby
is the fairly unspoiled beach of Canet d’En Berenguer
with miles of fine white sand and the marina.
Leaving
the coast for the interior we arrive at Petres
which houses San Jaime’s church built in 15th century.
The
next town is Gilet which is well known for its
Santo Espiritu convent and medieval tower. Albalat
dels Tarongers is also worth a visit just to see its 14th
century palace and castle ruins.
In
the centre of the Sierra Calderona is the village of
Segart, and from Estivella is the way to
ascend the peak of the Garbi. Nearby is an ancient Arab aqueduct, which is
still in use.
Arab
baths as well as a castle are to be found in the village of
Torres-Torres.
The
surrounding countryside of Algimia de Alfara and
Alfara de Algimia is very attractive.
Algar de Palancia is an agricultural village
based on citrus fruits and ¨nisperos¨.
